Maternity photos are all about shape and light. Get the angle of the bump right and the rest is easy. Here's exactly how.
The goal of a maternity session is simple: show the bump clearly and beautifully, and make the mom-to-be feel graceful rather than self-conscious. Two technical ideas do most of the work — turn the bump toward the light so it's defined by a soft shadow, and create a silhouette by arching gently and pulling fabric taut. Everything below builds on those two ideas.
👗 Wardrobe first: form-fitting fabric or a single hand pulling a flowy dress taut shows the bump far better than loose clothing, which hides it. Bring one fitted piece even if the rest is flowy.
Stand in full profile to the camera, one hand under the bump and one above, with a gentle arch in the lower back. The cleanest, most reliable maternity shot.
Turn the body about 45° from the camera, both hands framing the bump (one high, one low), chin dropped softly toward the front shoulder.
Stand side-on to a window, both hands supporting underneath, gaze down at the bump. Soft backlight separates the silhouette from the background.
Sit on the floor, lean back on one planted arm, the other hand resting on top of the bump. Point the front knee away to lengthen the legs.
Catch the fabric of a flowy dress and pull it taut over the bump, or let it billow with a fan/breeze. Adds movement and defines the shape.
Partner stands behind and wraps around, all four hands coming together on the bump to form a heart shape.
Face each other, foreheads touching, the bump between you, both pairs of hands cradling it. Quiet and connected.
Mom stands relaxed, partner kneels to kiss or rest their head against the bump. Mom rests a hand on the partner's head.
An older sibling presses an ear to the bump as if listening. Captures genuine curiosity — don't direct the expression, just suggest the action.
Sibling kisses the bump while mom looks down at them. A simple, emotional family-of-three (soon four) frame.
