The math is simpler than it sounds. To print sharp, you need enough pixels to cover every inch of paper at a good density. That density is measured in PPI (pixels per inch). The recipe: multiply each side of the print by your target PPI to get the pixel dimensions, then multiply those two numbers and divide by a million to get megapixels.
So an 8×10 print at the gallery standard of 300 PPI needs 2400 × 3000 pixels — about 7.2 megapixels. That's it. This is why a decade-old camera or a modern phone can produce beautiful standard-size prints: you rarely need the headline megapixel count manufacturers advertise. Megapixels only start to matter when you print big or crop hard.
Here's the secret the spec sheets don't tell you: the right resolution depends on how far away the print will be viewed. You hold a 4×6 at arm's length, so it needs the full 300 PPI to look crisp. But nobody presses their nose against a 24×36 poster — they stand back to take it in. At that distance your eye physically cannot resolve fine detail, so 150–180 PPI looks identical to 300. A useful rule of thumb: required PPI ≈ 3438 ÷ viewing distance in inches. A poster viewed from 4 feet (48 inches) only needs about 72 PPI to look sharp to a normal observer.
People use "DPI" and "PPI" interchangeably, but they're different things. PPI describes your image — how many pixels land on each inch of print. DPI describes the printer — how many tiny ink dots it sprays per inch (often 1440 or higher; many dots make up one pixel). Don't panic at the big numbers — those assume a hold-in-hand 300 PPI. Drop to 180 PPI for wall art and a 24×36 needs only ~28 MP, well within reach of a modern full-frame camera or a stitched panorama.
Multiply the print's width and height in inches by your target PPI (300 for gallery-sharp), multiply those two pixel counts together, and divide by a million. An 8×10 at 300 PPI needs 2400×3000 pixels = 7.2 MP. A 16×20 needs ~28.8 MP at 300 PPI but only ~7.2 MP at 150 PPI, which is fine for a print viewed from a few feet.
Use 300 PPI for prints you hold (4×6 to 8×10, photo books). 240 PPI is still excellent and accepted by most labs. For large prints viewed from several feet away, 180 or even 150 PPI looks perfectly sharp because your eye can't resolve the extra detail at that distance.
PPI (pixels per inch) describes your digital image; DPI (dots per inch) describes the printer's ink dots. They get used interchangeably, but for ordering prints you only need PPI — how many image pixels you have versus the print size you want.
You can upscale, but adding pixels can't add detail that was never captured — the software guesses. Modern AI upscalers handle moderate enlargements well, but the cleanest result always comes from starting with enough resolution. Shoot at full quality and avoid heavy cropping if you plan to print large.
Resolution gets it sharp — direction gets it good. Generate specific posing ideas, plan outfits and colors, or build a printable shot list so you don't walk away missing the frames you'll wish you had.
